CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Between 51% and 89% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

Regulation

When comparing Saxo and BlackBull Markets, several factors related to regulation and trust stand out. Saxo, established in 1992, is not only a bank but also boasts a strong position in terms of regulatory licenses. Saxo holds seven Tier-1 licenses, signifying a highly trusted status, and one Tier-2 license, which further reinforces their credibility. In contrast, BlackBull Markets, founded in 2014, is not a bank and holds just one Tier-1 license. Due to these differences, Saxo earns an impressive Trust Score of 99 out of 99 from ForexBrokers.com, indicating a superb level of trust and safety.

BlackBull Markets, however, holds a Trust Score of 78, placing it in the average risk category. While not publicly traded, both brokers differ in their licensing and financial backing, as Saxo’s status as a bank further strengthens its perceived reliability to investors. Traders seeking a broker with an exemplary regulatory standing might find Saxo to be a suitable choice, whereas those more focused on startup dynamism and other factors might consider BlackBull Markets despite its lower trust rating.

Fees

Saxo and BlackBull Markets both keep costs competitive, but they do it in different ways. Saxo earns 5/5 stars for Commissions and Fees and ranks #9 out of 63 brokers at ForexBrokers.com, while BlackBull Markets earns 4.5/5 stars and ranks #19 out of 63. In short: Saxo leans on tiered, spread-only pricing that gets better as your balance and trading volume grow, and BlackBull offers three clear account types with the potential for very low all-in costs on its Prime and Institutional tiers.

Saxo is commission-free for forex (spread-only), with a $3 per side ticket fee if you trade under 50,000 units in a month. Based on November 2023 data, average EUR/USD spreads were 1.1 pips (Classic), 1.0 (Platinum), and 0.9 (VIP); minimums were about 0.2 pips lower. The Classic account now has a $0 minimum deposit. Platinum requires $200,000 (AUD 300,000 in Australia for forex) or an upgrade via loyalty points earned through trading volume. VIP requires a $1,000,000 deposit or a high-volume loyalty upgrade (about $167 million in forex volume) and comes with the best pricing plus premium perks. Saxo also waives custody fees for share trading if you opt into securities lending.

BlackBull Markets’ costs depend on the account you choose. The Standard account is commission-free with no minimum deposit but has higher spreads. The Prime account requires $2,000, charges $3 per side ($6 round turn) and, based on March 2024 data, posted an average EUR/USD spread of 0.16—with an all-in cost around 0.76 pips after commissions. The ECN Institutional account requires $20,000 and lowers commissions to $2 per side ($4 round turn). On EUR/USD, BlackBull’s Prime all-in 0.76 pips can undercut Saxo’s VIP average of 0.9 pips, while Saxo’s pricing tends to improve meaningfully as you move up its tiers and maintain larger balances or higher volumes.
