CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Between 51% and 89% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

Regulation

When comparing online brokers, Saxo and FOREX.com both stand out with a perfect Trust Score of 99 from ForexBrokers.com, indicating they are highly trusted. Saxo, established in 1992, operates as a bank and holds an impressive seven Tier-1 licenses and one Tier-2 license, underscoring its strong regulatory position. In contrast, FOREX.com, founded in 1999 and publicly traded, matches Saxo with seven Tier-1 licenses and one Tier-2 license, although it is not a bank.

Despite starting seven years later than Saxo, FOREX.com's status as a publicly traded company might appeal to investors seeking transparency associated with listed firms. Meanwhile, Saxo's status as a bank may attract those who value stability and traditional banking roots. Both brokers exhibit strong regulatory credentials, providing traders with a secure and trustworthy trading environment. With equal Trust Scores and Tier-1 licenses, either platform makes a compelling choice depending on individual preferences.

Fees

Saxo earns 5 stars for commissions and fees and ranks #8 out of 63 brokers; FOREX.com earns 4.5 stars and ranks #15. Both brokers publish clear pricing, but they take different paths to get there, which can affect your all-in costs depending on your balance, location, and trading volume.

Saxo is commission-free for forex, making money on the spread, with one exception: if you trade less than 50,000 units per month, there’s a $3 per side ticket fee. As of November 2023, typical EUR/USD spreads were 1.1 pips (Classic), 1.0 (Platinum), and 0.9 (VIP), with minimums about 0.2 pips tighter. The Classic account now has a $0 minimum deposit, while Platinum requires $200,000 and VIP $1,000,000. Saxo also waives custody fees on share trading if you opt into securities lending.

FOREX.com’s Standard account averaged 1.4 pips on EUR/USD in the U.S. (July 2023), while outside the U.S. averaged about 0.74 pips. Its RAW account targets lower spreads (about 0.13 pips) plus a $7 per standard lot commission ($3.5 per side), with volume rebates of $2–$9 per million; however, unless you trade more than $50 million per month, the all-in costs for U.S. clients tend to align with the Standard account. Bottom line: high-balance, high-volume traders often find Saxo’s upper tiers highly competitive, while FOREX.com’s RAW plan can shine for very active traders who reach higher rebate tiers; casual traders may see Saxo’s Classic as comparable or cheaper, keeping in mind Saxo’s small-ticket fee for very low monthly volume.
