Vantage is generally the better pick for commissions and fees when compared with HFM. Vantage’s pricing depends on the account type you choose: the spread-only Standard STP account, the commission-based RAW ECN account, or the lower-cost PRO ECN account. Its Standard account showed typical EUR/USD spreads of 1.30 pips, while the RAW account averaged 0.15 pips plus a $3 commission per side, for an all-in cost of about 0.75 pips. HFM’s trading costs are a little higher than average overall. Its standard accounts typically show spreads of 1.2 pips, though no date range is provided, so the true average could be higher. HFM’s Zero account lowers the effective cost to about 0.7 pips after commission, but this is not an average spread. HFM is rated 4 out of 5 stars and is ranked #29 out of 36 brokers for commissions and fees.
In simple terms, both brokers offer low-cost choices for active traders, but Vantage has the edge thanks to its cheaper top-tier account and stronger overall ranking. Vantage and HFM both give traders a wide choice of platforms and tools, and the two brokers look very similar in the basics. Each one offers a free demo account for practice, its own in-house platform, a Windows desktop download, a web-based platform, copy trading, MetaTrader 4, and MetaTrader 5. Vantage and HFM both make it easy to trade on the go, since each offers mobile apps for iPhone and Android. They also both include stock or forex price alerts, trendline drawing tools, and auto-saving for chart drawings. However, neither broker offers watchlist symbol syncing between the mobile app and the online account, so watchlist changes do not carry over across devices.
Where Vantage pulls ahead is in charting depth. Its mobile app offers 30 technical studies, compared with just 5 at HFM. Vantage and HFM both give traders a solid set of market research tools, including daily market commentary, forex news from major sources like Bloomberg and Reuters, sentiment data, and an economic calendar with global events. Both brokers also include Autochartist, which can help traders spot possible trade setups using technical and fundamental signals.
