CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Between 51% and 89% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

Regulation

FOREX.com, founded in 1999, stands out as a highly regarded online broker with a stellar Trust Score of 99 out of 99 from ForexBrokers.com. Despite not being a bank, it is publicly traded, which adds a layer of trust for its users. The broker boasts an impressive seven Tier-1 licenses, which are regarded as highly trusted, and one Tier-2 license, ensuring its strong regulatory standing. These elements underline FOREX.com’s firm position as a highly trusted broker.

In contrast, Octa, established in 2011, has a Trust Score of 72, categorizing it as having an average risk. Like FOREX.com, Octa is not a bank, nor is it publicly traded, which may influence its perceived reliability. Octa holds one Tier-1 license, which is highly trusted, and one Tier-2 license, reflecting its compliance with standard regulatory practices. While Octa provides a viable service, its regulatory credentials are notably less extensive than those of FOREX.com.

Fees

Comparing commissions and fees, FOREX.com tends to be pricier in the U.S. unless you opt for its RAW account, while Octa has markedly improved and now competes closely with low-cost MetaTrader brokers. For ratings and rankings: FOREX.com earns 4.5 out of 5 stars and ranks #15 of 63 for Commissions and Fees; Octa earns 4 out of 5 stars and ranks #26 of 63.

FOREX.com’s Standard account (the only MetaTrader option) shows typical EUR/USD spreads of about 1.4 pips in the U.S. based on July 2023 data, with lower averages of 0.74 pips outside the U.S. The discontinued DMA account has been replaced by the commission-based RAW account, which posted typical EUR/USD spreads of 0.13 pips in February 2024. RAW pricing adds a $7 commission per standard lot ($3.50 per side), which is roughly a 0.7-pip equivalent on top of the quoted spread, and includes six volume tiers with rebates of $2–$9 per million. Unless you trade more than about $50 million per month (with the biggest savings kicking in at very large volumes), the all-in cost often ends up similar to the Standard account for U.S. traders.

Octa’s costs depend on your account type and which entity you open with. EU clients (MT5 only) see a listed average EUR/USD spread of 0.5 pips, while international entities list about 0.9 pips; however, Octa does not provide a date range for these averages. Octa also advertises no slippage on 97.5% of orders and no overnight carry costs, though some rules can limit high-frequency strategies. Overall pricing has improved and can be competitive, especially if you’re comfortable with its entity-based differences and the lack of timestamped spread data.
